Progression of My Art
![]() |
| September - 2010 |
This was my first drawing from a tablet back during September of 2010. I had no experience with a tablet and had been using a mouse to draw on the computer. At this point, I never dreamed of becoming a concept artist or an illustrator. I didn't think I had the potential to.

During the winterbreak of the same year I practiced by using the different brush settings in photoshop. I also experimented with a lot of different techniques on creating art digitally. All I did during my winterbreak was watch tutorials online, inspire myself by looking at work done by professional artists in the industry, and PAINT PAINT PAINT. This is when I realize that it is possible to push myself to any skill I want. All I had to do was work for it.

Spring semester was when I started to use texture brushes. I realized how much more efficient you can be when using a cloud brush, foliage brush, and rock texture brush. This when I started to challenge myself by creating artwork as fast as I could. I would usually limit the my time to paint down to 1 hour. This forced to find shorcuts when painting in photoshop.

Summerbreak had just started and I went to this convention called Evolve CG. There I met the concept artist from the God of War franchise, Eric Ryan. He helped me tremendously by showing me techniques and gave me a list of references that I should use during my future paintings. Because of him, my next piece that I did shortly after jumped tremendously in quality. The piece above got me the Daily Deviation award on Deviantart. Gahh! I was speechless.

A couple of months after I got a job offer by a game company based in Turkey. They saw my work online and asked if I was interested on working illustrations for an online strategy game. Of course excited o'l me was like "Hell YEA!" I accepted the job during the summer and had a contract all the way down to winter. I was like a little school girl seeing my artwork in a game. It was like a sample of what could potentially happen in the future. This is when I made it my goal to be an art director one day at a triple A game company.

It was winterbreak again and I had just found out that I was accepted into FIEA, a masters program focused on game design. After celebrating, I was pretty much doing the same thing from the previous year. I wanted to see how much I progressed. So I painted an updated version of a piece from last winterbreak. It was clear on how much I had progressed out of that single year. It was nice to see that I was heading in the right direction.

So here I am now! Recently there was an art contest held by Riot Games, they are responsible for League of Legends. Later I received an email saying that my piece made it to the top 32 out of 4500 entries. I received an honorable mention for the art piece above. I can almost taste the game industry! There is so much that I still need to learn. During my next 2 years in FIEA, I am going to continue to improve my skills as an artist. I want to be able to graduate and have a strong portfolio that will get me into companies such as ArenaNet and Blizzard.
My progression will probably never will be over. It's because I love what I do, and I want to keep on getting better at it. If you want to become an concept artist or illustrator, DO IT! Look back on where I started. You CAN do it too.
